You Just Bought A New Home, Now What?
You just bought a new home, hopefully from Weichert Realtors® SPM, what is next?
- Put your paperwork in a safe place, something that is fireproof is best. You need these documents for taxes and when you decide to sell your house.
- Make sure that utilities and other household bills are paid by the previous homeowners. Make sure they have all of their other bills forwarded to their new home. This is important so that utilizes and internet can be put in your name.
- Change all the locks, change the alarm system or codes, and reset garage door codes. Changing all codes and locks is important so that the previous owner does not have access to your home and security systems.
- Clean your new home or hire a cleaning crew to clean your new home before you move all your belongings in. The seller may have had someone clean the home, but you can not be sure how clean it actually is. It is not required to be spotless before selling the home. This will help your peace of mind and give your new home a fresh look and clean start.
- Paint as soon as possible. It is easier to paint your new home before you move all of your belongings in. If you want to clean carpets or change the flooring do it before you move in. This will keep you from having to move all over again.
- Change your address with the post office. Make sure all your mail will now be sent to your new home. You may still receive mail from the previous owner which you can return to the post office or to the previous owner.
- If there are any repairs that need to be done, get them done as soon as possible. The best time would be before you move all your belongings in or unpack.
- After a few weeks, make sure that the transfer of property has been recorded and verified with the local municipality.
